High-Risk Pregnancy – WTF

Any other mamas out there go through a high-risk pregnancy? Holy fuck is it scary. Pregnancy itself is a scary journey and obviously from the moment we all find out we want nothing but the best for our babies, but finding out there is something wrong or something that needs to be closely monitored is a whole other ball game. Don’t get me wrong, all moms deserve praise for being pregnant regardless but I think those who are going through or have gone through a high-risk pregnancy need a little extra love and support.

For those who don’t know – hi, I’m Megan and I gave birth to a healthy baby girl in September of 2023. Since I am a Type 1 Diabetic I had a high-risk pregnancy that was closely monitored from even before I found out I was pregnant. That’s right, the work started before my husband and I even began trying to have a baby. I had to do a lot of prep work if you will, to make sure my blood sugar levels were in “perfect” condition so that there would be minimal health risks to myself or my baby.

While I knew all along that this would be my journey going into it, I don’t think you can be fully prepared for the level of anxiety that comes with being that closely monitored. I had to meet with an OBGYN, endocrinologist, nurse and dietician every 2 weeks until I reached 36 weeks pregnant, and then the appointments became weekly until I was induced at 38 weeks. I also had ultrasounds at every appointment and oh boy was that a lot!! Obviously the appointments themselves can be stressful as you are just constantly making sure everything is okay with your baby, but what no one talks about is how stressful this is if you are working. Trying to take time off of work for appointments every 2 weeks that often lasted hours and were unpredictable was extremely difficult. Luckily my work was very understanding but trying to manage all of this was just a whole other level of exhaustion.

I’m curious to hear about your experience with high-risk pregnancy, or with a normal pregnancy! Was it a breeze or were you feeling stressed the whole time? What helped you get through it?

Those almost 10 months can truly feel like an eternity but I also miss it.
